| TRIESTE - Italy Trieste is one of Italy more particular cities: situated in the north-east it had been under Austro-Hungarian Empire as well as Istria until 1954 when it definitely became Italian, though it remains home to a sizable Slovene minority. Its geographical position, at a point where the Adriatic Sea meets and at the same time divides the German and the Slave backgrounds, the Latin and the Balkan worlds, has always played a determining role in the history of Trieste. |
